Super Myths Smashed (53K Views Say You’ll Love This)

Our recent episode got more than 500x views so we thought we share this with you as a reminder that small, smart moves in super can lead to big wins especially in today's market.

So I turned my PC on yesterday and this happened.

Now I’ve been running the podcast for over 5 years and it usually not a huge  25 – 50 view per, per platform for each episode. From that subtract 2 views as those are usually our Mum’s politely watching.

Anyway, we made a video that we thought was a bit dry – but it instead did the opposite!

Like 500x more than the usual episode…

So if you’re new here; hullo welcome to Wealthlab.

The aim of our business is to help every day Mum’s and Dads do better with their super, retirement plans and prepare for a weather future. We’re probably not what you think of when it comes to two financial planners. Phil and I try and keep things casual, avoiding stuffy suit and tie type vibes. Instead focusing on what matters. Quality advice, delivered in a way that you understand and helps you build a better retirement.

Anyway for the 0.1% of you who have not watched the video. Here it is,

Check this out: In just 12 days since publishing on September 16, it’s hit 53K views, 6.2K watch hours, and gained us +1100 subscribers.

That’s a massive jump from our usual 100-ish views per video. Who knew spilling the beans on super rules could go viral?

We dive into lesser-known 2025 updates, like age pension, tax tweaks, and strategies to maximise your retirement nest egg without the jargon overload.

Why share this? It’s a reminder that small, smart moves in super can lead to big wins especially in today’s market. Speaking of which…

Quick Market Snapshot: September 2025 Highlights

  • ASX Resilience Amid Volatility: The ASX edged higher this month, buoyed by gold miners rallying, though retailers like Myer reported slumps due to big write-downs. Overall, the S&P/ASX 200 shows cautious optimism as we head into Q4.
  • Gold continues to hit all time highs. The market capitalisation of gold, has increased by approximately $8.2 USD trillion year-to-date in 2025 (from roughly $18.2 trillion at the start of the year to about $26.4 trillion as of late September). With a modest increase in new mining production (from 216,265 tonnes at the end of 2024 to an estimated 218,930 tonnes by late September, based on quarterly production data of 856 tonnes in Q1 and 909 tonnes in Q2, with a similar estimate for Q3). The primary driver of the 43% price appreciation amid economic factors like inflation and geopolitical tensions.
  • (Note all of the Crypto market cap combined is only about $3T).
  • AUD Outlook: The Australian dollar is staging a short-lived comeback, but economists warn gains may fade with returning US strength. Keep an eye on this for international investments.

Things keep getting more expensive

With retirement costs climbing (ASFA’s latest figures show a comfortable single retirement now needs $53,289 a year – up 1.72% from last year), getting your access strategy sorted could mean retiring up to 5 years sooner.

Fresh from the headlines: Aussies are facing a “wake-up call” with retirement expenses jumping an extra $13,000 annually compared to five years ago, per ASFA data. Meanwhile, AMP’s research shows a slump in confidence, many feel underprepared as super balances at age 57 fall short of “comfort” levels.

On a brighter (sort of) note: Macquarie’s repaying Shield investors 100% by September 30, a win for those caught in the mess, but a stark reminder to vet your fund. If yours feels opaque or underperforming, now’s the time for a review.

One Last Thought

Retirement isn’t about hitting a magic number, it’s about having enough to live how you want, when you want.
